Child Abuse Prevention: Youth

The Monique Burr Foundation Safety Matters programs were developed with Child Advocacy Centers, child protection agencies, mental health professionals, attorneys, law enforcement, educators, and other professionals. Facilitators present engaging, interactive lectures and lead group discussions, games, and skills-practice activities. This is the only comprehensive, evidence-based, age-appropriate curriculum for elementary, middle, and high school students. These programs educate and empower children, teens, and all relevant adults with information and strategies to prevent, recognize, and respond appropriately to bullying, cyberbullying, all types of abuse, and digital abuse dangers.

40 Developmental Assets

The DeKalb County Mental Health Coalition, consisting of Family Service Agency, Adventure Works, Youth Service Bureau, and the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education, provides trainings on the 40 Developmental Assets. This framework was created by Search Institute® consisting of preventative measures, positive experiences, and qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring and responsible. These assets are protective factors that have been consistently shown, by research, to buffer youth from risk. The more assets a child has the higher probability that child will not be involved in behaviors such as: teen pregnancy, school dropout, substance abuse, delinquency or violence.
